Born in the back room of a bassist’s bungalow in the ‘burbs, this band began with a brainstorm buffered by a few beers. The assembled group of musicians set out to answer several pressing questions:

• “Should we do covers, originals, or a mix?”
• “Do you think this will work?”
• “What happens when a dog has a midlife crisis?”

And thus, The Cold Turkeys were formed. Originally the brainchild of guitarist Keating Johns and bassist Pat McCool, the pair invited percussionist Andy Kruspe to help them rework a classic Grateful Dead track for an upcoming recording project. The material quickly found form in their hands, and part of the first question had been answered.

The trio brought several instruments to their first jam session and settled on a unique instrumentation: acoustic guitar, bass, and Irish bodhrán (frame drum). The resulting “folky, yet forward” sound of this trio required just the right lead instrument, and violinist Michael Bowman joined the effort. This choice of core instruments became the basis for their first repertoire list, and the second question was answered.

But the question about the dog… yes, silly at first, but integral to the formation of this ensemble. Keating Johns began to bring ideas for original material to subsequent rehearsals, and the band members began a highly collaborative songwriting process. One of the first tunes that they tackled was “A Dog’s Tail.” When discussing the concept of the song, the third question was lofted into the conversation, and “Tail” became “Tale.” The resulting work sessions led to several originals being added to later set lists… and the resolution of the first and third questions.

The band has since played at several venues around Huntsville, including Stove House, Green Bus Brewing, and PorchFest FivePoints. In addition, they have been fortunate to have several local legends join them for various performances, including Microwave Dave and Jim Cavender.

Sleeping in Trees debuted on the Huntsville Madison County Public Library Blast Music platform in November 2023.
